The Spring Garden

Words and Illustrations by Rachel Hardacre

The arrival of spring is one to be greatly anticipated. Days dip between frost and dew, birds sing and sunlight gently wakes the sleeping plants. As rhubarb buds and hosta shoots make their way out of the chilly soil, I begin to dream of crisp, spring vegetables. A spring garden is a must here in Minnesota – our summers take forever to warm up, leaving our garden beds empty from late April until early June. There are so many vegetables that enjoy the brisk spring weather, making it worth digging into the soil early.

I will walk you through a simple spring garden plan to try out in your own backyard.
